Dollar store Bolles bill: After Republican Rep. Selina Bliss’ bill to allow for a monument to slain Arizona Republic reporter Don Bolles (who was assassinated 50 years ago this month) stalled out, GOP Sen. Shawnna Bolick introduced SB1663 — a bill to create a “Freedom of Speech” monument on the Capitol grounds. It would have allowed two dead people’s names to be placed on it every year, but a bipartisan group of House members shot it down. (June 10, 2026)

PLEEEEEAAAASE, MOM: Republican Rep. Selina Bliss’ bill to create a monument honoring murdered journalist Don Bolles (sans the Charlie Kirk add-on that Republican Sen. Jake Hoffman wants) passed the House Government Committee with unanimous support yesterday. That means there are two versions of the bill moving through the Legislature: a good bill that everyone likes, and a shitty version that Democrats and even members of Bolles’ family don’t want. “This bill feels like when my 11-year-old, my baby, just asks me for something over and over and over, and after many ‘no’s’ I say ‘fine,’” Republican Rep. Rachel Keshel told her colleagues. (February 19, 2026)

Your tax dollars at work: House Speaker Steve Montenegro authorized building a new $630,000 recording studio in the House basement and spending another $115,000 a year for a video producer, the Republic’s Mary Jo Pitzl discovered through public records. Montenegro said the money came out of last year’s budget, and he spent it to provide lawmakers "a reliable, professional space to communicate directly with the people they represent.” It opened in late June and has an 18-foot-by-eight-foot LED screen where lawmakers can choose from a pre-approved folder of pictures for video backgrounds, like a spiffy flag display you can see in Republican Reps. Selina Bliss and Quang Nguyen’s legislative wrap-up video. (July 14, 2025)
