With or without you: Over the weekend, more than 250 people gathered in midtown Tucson to discuss President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” The town hall was the latest in a string of public meetings critical of Republican Congressman Juan Ciscomani and his refusal to hold public, in-person town halls in his district. These events are not new — but the panel of high-profile Democrats, including Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott, state Sen. Priya Sundareshan and state Rep. Nancy Gutierrez, as well as congressional candidates JoAnna Mendoza and Deja Foxx1 show the dwindling list of Democrats in Pima County willing to work with Ciscomani. (June 23, 2025)

Not done yet: Tucson Democratic Rep. Nancy Gutierrez tried to get $3.8 million into the state budget for free lunches at public schools. Her bill, HB2213, passed several committees with bipartisan support, but she was told Wednesday that the bill was dead. But she’s not done with it. Gutierrez announced that she’ll launch a formal protest on the House floor and highlight that Republican-backed bills for border security require more than $50 million. (March 13, 2025)

The billion-dollar exodus: Arizona’s highest performing public and charter schools are losing students to school vouchers, and the ESA program is expected to cost taxpayers $1 billion next school year, 12News’ Craig Harris reports. Harris found 45% of the 87,000 kids using vouchers never went to a public school, and most of the school districts that voucher recipients once attended are A-rated. Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Nancy Gutierrez penned an op-ed for the Daily Star arguing the Legislature should have passed a renewal of Prop 123 at the beginning of the year, but Republican lawmakers “cooked up a scheme” to instead tie the annual public school funding to constitutional protections for school vouchers. "When Republicans finally reveal their plan’s details, we expect it to be really all about universal vouchers that have no regulation on safety and no proof of learning required,” Gutierrez wrote.
